Windmills, Manure, & Masks. Oh My!

We have made it to our first actual RV park, just outside of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I've always wanted to visit the Dakotas, so I was excited to cross the state line from Minnesota. Well, all I could think of was: The Nothingness. Vast stretches of land, covered with corn as far as the eye can see. Silos and windmills - welcome landmarks for a weary driver - serve as the only things interrupting the dry, flat horizon. And then ... the smell. Admittedly, the smell began in Western MN, which looked pretty much exactly like Eastern South Dakota. Manure. Permeating the sides of Second Wave like water to a sponge. Now THAT was unexpected.

Yesterday we drove from Chicago to St. Paul, MN, where we spent the night with Mima and Papou, James' parents. Along the way we paid a visit to a giant pink elephant in a gas station off Interstate 90 - apparently a must see. It was cute and the girls got a kick out of it. Of course we had to buy $35 worth of Pinky swag, and I'm sure it's not the last time we get excited about something so silly.

The night with James' parents was luxurious. A delicious dinner, a cold cocktail, a comfortable bed, a warm shower - it was a nice change of pace (even though we've only been at this for 4 days!). The girls got to spend time with their grandparents, something everyone treasures. Ollie frolicked in the yard. All was good.

A long drive to Sioux Falls ensued this morning, but my furry co-pilot Ollie (who has claimed the passenger seat) provided great company while everyone worked in the back. We arrived at Jellystone RV Park at 5pm. A dusty campground, an assigned plot, a fire pit and a picnic table. We got everything set up while the girls played on a playground down the hill. The whole thing is completely surreal. I can't believe we're here. Maddy and I rode our bikes to explore and find wood. It was amazing. And so bizarre. I feel so filled with appreciation for this extraordinary experience that I can't find words to make this post funny or clever. Maybe tomorrow. After all, Mount Rushmore ROCKS!
